Fantastic coffee table book, well written, beautiful photos, nicely packaged for display.
This is a great addition to one's art book collection. The whole book is very eye-catching, and shows great milestones in the designs of plastics. The writing for each product is very informative, especially where one might not old enough to remember the product, and very accurate where she is.
If you want an exhaustive history of plastics in design or detailed information on resins and their production requirements then this book will not live up to its fanfare. If however you want a book giving a general introduction to the history of plastics in design the book is equal to many that have been printed over the years.It looks to have been rushed into print with information on some pieces conflicting with information elsewhere in the book, photo notes quoting different polymers to the the facing page's text and can't even live up to its dust jacket claim of "...extensive glossary of materials and processes will help the plastics neophyte distinguish their Jaxonite and Xylonite from their polyethylene and ABS..." as the limited glossary makes no reference at all to the ancient Jaxonite and Xylonite.Certainly the publishers are no designers themselves as when they boast that "As a final design flourish, Plastic Dreams comes with a specially designed orange plastic slipcase by Edson Matsuo of Melissa." they seem to fail to realize that smell is a very evocative sense and for some reason use the exact same cheap highly scented polymer that is used the world over in urinal mats.I had to air the book for a month before I could read it without my hands reeking of an unventilated toilet but then again perhaps the designers' intended their work to remind one of this place...
This book has some really unusual examples of plastic uses in it - definitely stuff I haven't seen featured before, and all put into context really successfully. I thought the slipcase was a really nice touch, smells like bubblegum! Plus the many fans of Melissa shoes (myself included) will love it and the beautiful Zaha Hadid for Melissa shoes featured inside - to see the contrast between early plastics and what is being achieved today is fascinating. A really well executed book, that really shows the versatility of this material with its vast range of gorgeous illustrations.
Really cool book with tons of beautiful illustrations and jam-packed with technical info...also comprehensively charts the history of plastics in a very readable way. Plus it has a great glossary section. If you're interested in design or plastics, this book ticks the all boxes.
